Monday's Photo: Swimming is overrated
Today's photo is a brand new species of frog fish, which has been recently discovered in Indonesia. Not only does it look a little odd, but its way of getting around, is a little un-fish like! It uses its fin to waddle around the reef.
Frog fish however, are already pretty "out there" when it comes to being a little odd. Check out these great images, though you really can't beat the hairy frog fish!
Frog fish are relatives of the angler fish, though this new species lacks the fishing pole lure that the angler uses to seduce its prey. However, it does have "leg-like" pectoral fins which are common to the angler family.
No doubt genetic studies and further research will reveal more, but it's a timely reminder that the ocean is full of previously unseen and unique animals and we must find better ways to preserve and protect our oceans so that this amazing diversity is not forever lost.
