Could these be the same species? Our aquarists were overjoyed when a fisherman donated this beautiful orange colored rockfish to the Monterey Bay Aquarium (left). But they were also puzzled, because it had characteristics of two species. Taking a chapter from CSI, they sent a fin clipping for DNA analysis. The answer: it’s a black-and-yellow rockfish—the same species shown at right. To our knowledge no one has ever seen an “orange morph” of this species—a rare find, and you can view it in the Kelp Holdfast gallery in the Splash Zone!
