The Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch program is the undisputed No. 1 source for anyone who wants to make ocean-friendly seafood choices. Now we're Droid-ready, with a new free app that puts our recommendations at your fingertips wherever you go.
The just-released Android version has all the features -- including Project FishMap so you can pinpoint restaurants and markets offering sustainable seafood -- that have earned the Seafood Watch app nearly 600,000 downloads since its iPhone launch in 2009.
With Android popularity soaring, Seafood Watch Senior Outreach Manager Sheila Bowman hopes those FishMap numbers will really soar.
"This is a great, great resource to help people find ocean-friendly seafood no matter where they are," she says. "With the new Android app, they'll have all our latest recommendations in an instant."
"And," Sheila adds, "by using Project FishMap, it's easy to share your discoveries when you find sustainable seafood on the menu. It's such a simple way to help everyone make better seafood choices."
Since Project FishMap's debut last December, more than 1,200 individuals have logged over 2,100 sustainable seafood recommendations in more than 400 cities across the United States. That database is growing larger by the day.
Other key features of the new Android app:
- Access to over 365 recommendations for seafood found across the U.S. -- automatically selected according to your geo-location.
- A special guide for sushi lovers, including listings by Japanese names.
- An option to add new restaurants and markets to the FishMap database.
- Earn virtual badges for using Project FishMap and share sustainable seafood findings with friends via Facebook and Twitter.
- Suggestions for sustainable alternatives to items on the Seafood Watch "Avoid" list.
- A highlighted list of "Super Green" seafood that's heart-healthy, low in contaminants and caught or farmed in environmentally friendly ways.
You can download the Seafood Watch app (with Project FishMap) right now, from the Android Market or learn more at the aquarium's website.

The great thing about an app is when it is "specifically designed for you." I best believe that Seafood Watch is "just for me".
